Welcome to Solve for Why!
This website is a place for me (Will Malmo) to keep track of my self-improvement. I started Solve for Why back in the summer of 2019 when I decided to try to teach myself math using the website Khan Academy. Every week I spend 8-10 hours studying and finish the week by writing a post summarizing what I learned. My intent with this website is to:
- Keep track of my progress
- Help me stay motivated
- Help me better understand and retain what I learn by putting it into my own words
- Improve my communication
The reason I decided to teach myself math was to develop another skill I could use in case a day comes when I’m unable to perform my regular job working as a squash pro. I’ve had a number of injuries playing squash over the past 20 years and after a particularly bad back injury in 2018, I was worried that the physical demands of coaching were too much and that I might need to change careers.
I’ve started to view what I’m doing as an experiment to see if it’s possible to use free, online education to become qualified for a job that would traditionally require a university degree.
My moonshot goal is to help discover new pathways that kids can take which circumvent university and instead use eLearning to get the education they need to work in higher paying careers. Feel free to check out what I’ve been learning in the Math section of my blog!
